Grands Echézeaux 1989
Decanted one half hour before service and tasted
during the following hour. Served next to La
Tache 1989.
The robe is a darker brick than the La Tache. It
appears to be more evolved and smells rich and
dark with mocha, coffee and a slightly green hint
of cabbage. The wine tastes markedly different
from the 1989 La Tache. In a blind tasting I
would not suspect that they are the same age as
the acidity of the La Tache makes it brighter and
leaner. This is darker and more concentrated
than the La Tache and does not have the tannin
or minerality of its cousin. It is softer and
rounder, though by no means flabby.
Echézeaux does an about face. Like the ’83 La
After a few minutes in the glass, the ’89 Grands
Tache, the wine decides to focus itself and wake
up. The warm, dark smells that were a bit heavy
at first lighten and brighten. A surprisingly
young red fruit emerges as I finish. One glass of
these wines is a treat. And a tease.
