Egiodola is a dark-skinned red wine grape used for a sparkling wine at Domaine de l’Ecu, in the Muscadet region of Loire Valley in France. The grape originated in 1924 France, by Pierre Marcel Durguety, he crossed Aboriou and Negramoll. Egiodola’s name is a contradiction of two basque words, egiazko odoka, meaning ‘true blood’ (Jancis Robinson 2012). The grape is not a common grape; it is mostly grown in France and Brazil. The wine characteristics are spicy, tannic and very low acidity. The grape was authorized for usage in 1978, although single vineyard wines made out of this grape are rare, it is most commonly used for blending purposes.

Domaine de L’Ecu is in the appellation of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, near the city of Nantes, on the Atlantic Coast of France. More specifically, it consists of 22 hectaires in La Bretonnière near the town of Le Landreau, in an area that benefits from significant winds off of the Atlantic that play a key role in moderating the temperature and helping to prevent diseases that occur in otherwise wet viticultural areas.
