Links to the history of Sonoma and a
bit of info on Chardonnay.
Don and Patricia Helfer planted this tiny vineyard which butts up to their backyard in 1993
after tasting the success their neighbor Steve Kistler was having with his vineyards a quarter
of a mile away.  What you see here is the entire vineyard.  Fred Scherrer buys their crop and
produces 40 to 50 cases of Chardonnay and even less Pinot Noir.

This is the view from the Helfer's back porch.  Notice the wooded area behind the vines.  That
is where the birds live.  The Helfers have stretched netting over their entire vineyard in hopes
that their harvest does not become bird poop on someone's freshly washed car.

All of these pictures from the Helfer Vineyard were taken on October 12, 2006, the day before
harvest, which, like most all the work in vineyard, is done by hand.

Candid Wines buys a few cases of the Helfer Chard each year and it is available almost
exclusively on special order.  If you would like to try a bottle, please contact one of our
customers as listed
here.
