October 12th, 2006.  Tomorrow morning in the cool weather these grapes will be picked.

The darker grapes indicate that botrytis cinerea, or Noble Rot is starting to set in.  This is a
beneficial mold which, in ideal conditions leads to the shrivelling of the grapes and
concentration of the natural sugars.  The sweet wines from Sauternes and Vouvray depend on
Noble Rot, but it is generally a threat to growers of dry wines.  The mold loves wet, cool
conditions, so a little rain during the early fall days before harvest can lead to problems.

A little bit adds complexity.   The wine maker at
Domaine de la Romanée Conti told us that
they are always happy to see up to 25% of the grapes in the famed Montrachet vineyard
affected.

The black hose at the bottom of the picture is for drip irrigation when rainfall does not provide
enough water for the vines.
