Jean Schaetzel's entire focus is the transfer of his
wines each year.

The story of each vineyard is told through
naturally healthy plants that are encouraged to
reach down into the soil and report back on
what they find.  Jean feels that the use of
chemicals in pesticides or fertilizers
fundamentally damages the plants ability to
extract the best of what each vineyard has to
offer.  He is one of Alsace's most vocal
proponents of organic farming.

The result is a consistently pure and clean
expression of place.  From his introductory
"Cuvee Reserves" to his Grand Cru bottlings,
Jean grows wines that seduce connoisseurs and
entice the uninitiated.   Delicious on their own,
these wines are best with food.

Jean is likely the greatest Alsatian producer of
whom Riesling lovers have never heard.  His
focus in the vineyard is obsessive; his focus on
marketing is not.   Consider that the sign
pictured above is the only indication that visitors
have arrived at one of the regions' greatest
estates.
