| Most of us have hobbies. Most of us have garages. Few of us grow our hobbies from the garage to the big time. That is exactly what Tim Olson and John Ogden have done in the Russian River Valley. Twenty years ago, Tim was making wine as a hobby in his garage and he likes to say that the only thing that has changed is that the garage is a bit bigger now. We'd respectfully disagree. Years of buying grapes from places like Caymus and now Unti Vineyards have added an appreciation for great vineyard sites to Tim's repertoire. Years working for barrel companies and asking his customers how they made wine added an impressive knowledge of how fruit from good vineyards reacts to wood from good forests, and how to recognize both. Add John Ogden's business acumen, interest in cultivating long term relationships and ability to act as a foil when needed, and this little hobby starts to look a lot more like a skilled, small production winemaking team. Of course Tim feels that far to often winemakers want to winemake and only spoil a good thing. That's wine the Olson Ogden wines are unfined, unfiltered and generally handled as little as possible from harvest to bottling. The result is a lineup of clean, focused wines with the potential to make wine lovers happy on release and happier down the road. Not bad for a garage wine. |
