| one acre fund at the Ritz-Carlton Before guest speaker Larry Levy of Levy Restaurants spoke about Social Entrepreneurship, he announced that an anonymous $50,000 matching grant had been made prior to the dinner! Mr. Levy pointed out that in a week where the stock markets were crashing, we should all remember that the size of our problems are relative. Well said. Despite the fact that our event fell on the first day in our lifetimes that both Chicago baseball teams were (albeit briefly) playing in the post-season, and that financial markets were crashing around us, it appears that with the $50,000s grant, we have a chance to have raised nearly $100,000, or 5X as much as we did last year. This incredible sum, and the near exponential growth rate is almost as impressive as the growth of One Acre Fund's efforts on the ground in Kenya and Rwanda. Andrew Youn reported on the growth of the Fund in just three years from a few families is Kenya to 4000 households in Kenya and Rwanda! This translates to roughly 25,000 people being helped, one acre at a time. Perhaps the most amazing stat is that infant mortality in the areas where OAF works has been shown to have been reduced by 1/2. Thank you to all who attended and to all who contributed to our success. Together, we truly are making a difference in people's lives. |
| From American Magazine: "Since One Acre started the program, it has enrolled about 2,000 farmers in Kenya and Rwanda. Not a bad beginning, but Youn’s immodest goal is to help millions." Read More. |
