| If you suspect that well made organic wines might taste better than others, and that well made organic wines grown on sloping hillsides might be even better, Porter Creek is the place for you. George Davis has more than a suspicion that all of the above is true. In 1977 he bought forty acres of prime land in the Russian River Valley. Under his guidance, organic certification was earned for the vineyards and they now apply biodynamic practices. The vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which are vinified using traditional Burgundian techniques emphasizing elegance and layers over size and power. George's son Alex took over as winemaker in 1997, but not until he had completed extensive training with the likes of Marcel Guigal in the Rhone and Chistophe Roumier and Bernard Michelot in Burgundy. Alex has expanded Porter Creek's offerings to include Syrah and Carignane, sourced from outstanding vineyards nearby. Tiny amounts of Alex' wines are made available in Illinois each year. Individuals can seek them out from fine retailers like The Bottle Shop in Wilmette or at restaurants like Custom House in Chicago. |
