Scherrer at The Village Cellar in Hinsdale

Ray and Kathy at The Village Cellar in Hinsdale have been eager supporters of Fred and The Scherrer Winery since a customer walked in the door to special order the Old and Mature Vine Zinfandel.

At any given time, you are likely to find the Sonoma Cabernet, the Scherrer Vineyard Cabernet, Zinfandoodle, and possibly a few half bottles of something older and a little harder to find.  Be sure to ask them about their trip to Sonoma and visit with Fred at the winery when you see them.

On this night, we opened Fred’s current lineup along with a few half bottles of the 2001 Alexander Valley Cabernet that we’ve had “in the side pocket” to quote Fred, and I brought at 1999 Alexander Valley Cab as an extra treat to show just how gracefully wines from the Scherrer Vineryard, made by Fred, can age.

We also shared half of a bottle of the 2008 Platt Vineyard Pinot Noir to much fanfare.  From a vineyard that seems to be on the ragged edge of the Sonoma Coast in terms of climate and suitability for grapes, this wine shows just how promising the area is in certain years.  So far, the wines we’ve tasted from Fred from this site seem to justify the effort and cost.
