reviews Fred Scherrer is often referred to as "a winemaker's winemaker". That is because Fred is obsessive about the details that affect his wines from vine to bottle. No stone is left unturned when Fred sets his mind to improving the quality of his wines. Fred learned his craft at UC Davis and then as the winemaker for Dehlingher Winery until 1997. We think we have stumbled onto one of California's future superstars, but don't take our word for it:

2002 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 94 pts "...a clean, focused, beautifully knit, perfectly balanced wine...(an) UNBELIEVABLE value...Our hats off to the Scherrer family for this amazing accomplishment."
2002 Fort Ross Chardonnay WE 92 (11/2005) Deliciously firm and complex, this Chard shows well- ripened tropical fruit flavors with a mineral-and-steel tanginess and high acidity. It’s well-oaked, but those sappy, charry vanilla flavors really play well against the fruit.
2001 Scherrer Vineyard Cabernet WE 93 (11/2005) Both of Scherrer’s ’01 Cabs are quite distinctive, but this vineyard designate is superior both in terms of flavor and structure. It’s a big wine that rewards in cassis, black currants and cocoa, and even though it’s very soft, it’s layered and complex.
| We first learned about Scherrer Winey through the good work of Rusty Gaffney, MD, "The Prince of Pinot". As The Prince reminds us: "If You Drink No Noir, You PinotNoir" "Fred has a unique ability to express the best in each vintage. His wines are never heavy-handed or manipulated, just nurtured to reach their full potential." The PinotFile, November 15th, 2005 "Dehlinger Estate in the Russian River Valley was one of the true pioneers of Pinot Noir in California. The vinous jewels that came from the winery in the 90’s and earned the winery’s “cult” status were for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the winemaker during this time in which the Dehlinger Estate rose from near obscurity to become a high profile player in the international Pinot Noir wars. That winemaker was Fred Scherrer, a humble and soft spoken man who possesses the uncanny ability to somehow fine tune his wines into superb examples of the varietal expression. Fred left Dehlinger in 1998 to focus on his own family label, Scherrer Wines. With the lack of restraints and the artistic freedom that accompanies tiny production wineries, Scherrer has moved on to craft his own reputation as one of California’s most coveted producers".
