About Slow Food:

Not familiar with the good work of Slow Food around
the world?   Here is their mission:

Slow Food USA envisions a future food system that is
based on the principles of high quality and taste,
environmental sustainability, and social justice – in
essence, a food system that is good, clean and fair.
We seek to catalyze a broad cultural shift away from
the destructive effects of an industrial food system
and fast life; toward the regenerative cultural, social
and economic benefits of a sustainable food system,
regional food traditions, the pleasures of the table,
and a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life.

Tomatoes for Terra Madre

Self control on a cold day in February when the heirloom seed catalogue arrives is not
my strong point.  Tomatoes fuel my irrationality, and inevitably when the calendar
says August I find myself wondering why in the world I ordered so many plants.  This
year, I took a disciplined approach and selected only those that sounded exceptionally
good.  I still ended up with 43 varieties.

Well, its time to share.  Not just my tomatoes, but yours as well, and your squash, and
your cool new herbs, and your cucumbers, and your favorite recipes, and anything
else you are excited to be growing and eating these days.

At the center of this first annual Slow Food Chicago Tomato Fest will be "The Tomato
Table".  Bring a sign indicating the variety and if possible, where you found the plant
or seeds.  We'll compare and contrast and, without a doubt, I'll be looking for new
varieties to plant next year...

Those of us you who came to the Potluck Dinner earlier this summer will remember
the incredible selection of food members and non members contributed.  It was that
night when we conceived of Tomato Fest, so come on back out and join us!

Nothing growing?  No worries; bring your favorite summer dish to share and we'll do
our best to see if we can't talk you into a small container garden for next year.  It
always starts so innocently. Next thing you know we'll be sharing dishes and raising
funds to send you to
Terra Madre.

Please join us,

Damien

Terra Madre is an international network of over 7,000 food producers, cooks, and
university educators from 150 countries, including over 800 delegates from the U.S.
united by a common goal of global sustainability in food. Across cultures and climates,
the “food communities” of Terra Madre come together to share innovative solutions
and time-honored traditions for keeping small-scale agriculture and sustainable food
production alive and well. The next edition of Terra Madre will be October 23-27, 2008.
