Chicago Tomato Fest 2009
Our plant sales were a stunning success! Who knew that so many Chicagoans would want to get in on the Heirloom action?
NPR Host Peter Sagal is a fan of heirlooms.
TomatoFest Chicago has sold and given away nearly 500 heirloom seedlings and donated roughly $1000 to Slow Food Chicago and The Garfield Park Conservatory. We look forward to seeing everyone who bought a plant and is now raising heirloom tomatoes at Chicago TomatoFest 2009 on September 10th. In the meantime, our Old School BLT Bonanza runs from August 17th to September 20th. What is an "Old School" BLT? It starts with Heirloom Tomatoes, and from there, might go just about anywhere. We thought about insisting on local, heritage breed pork, but then Paul Kahan of Blackbird, Publican and Avec fame told is he is thinking of an ELT for Blackbird, with the "E" standing for smoked eel. Who are we to argue with Paul Kahan? The response from restaurants has been stunning. Come August, BLT lovers will have the chance to compare BLT's from the city's best restaurants along side some of the happiest neighborhood spots. Socca, The Signature Room on the 95th, Osteria Via Stato, and many, many more will participate. The BLT''s will begin to be served as we start to see locally grown heirloom's hit their peak of ripeness. I suspect that will be sometime in early August and it will run for roughly a month. For updates on when and where you can start searching for Candid BLT's please jump over to our TomatoFest blog. You might also follow us on Twitter @tomatofest, where we post updates on Tomatoes, wine events and happy occurrences in and around the Windy City. Damien
