| Chicago Tomato Fest 2010 |
| NPR Host Peter Sagal is a fan of heirlooms. |
| This spring, TomatoFest Chicago sold or gave away nearly 500 heirloom seedlings, donating some $800 to Slow Food Chicago. We look forward to seeing everyone who bought a plant and is now raising heirloom tomatoes at Chicago TomatoFest 2010 on September 9th at The Chicago Honey Coop. In the meantime, the second annual Old School BLT Bonanza runs from August 23rd to September 19th. What is an "Old School" BLT? It starts with Heirloom Tomatoes, probably but not always includes local heirloom pork, and from there, might go just about anywhere. In our second year, we are asking participating Chefs to donate $0.50 per sandwich sold to preSERVE, Slow Food Chicago's effort to build a community garden in North Lawndale. As of August 15th, participating restaurants and stores include: Osteria Via Stato, Custom House Tavern, Uncommon Ground (both locations), Green Grocer Chicago, and City Provisions. We expect more chefs to sign up in the coming days, so stay tuned! For updates on participating restaurants and news on Chicago TomatoFest follow us on Twitter @tomatofest, where we post updates on Tomatoes and other happy occurrences in and around the Windy City.
